چکیده

Whereas much is known about the behavior and development of captive young wolf (Canis lupus) pups, less detail has been published some aspects free-ranging pup behavior. This article synthesizes 42 observations Arctic pups from ages 13 through 52 days made during 10 summers 1987 2006 on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada. Besides listing key behaviors such as howling caching, I record unique urination without adult stimulation (22, 33, 42, days), knowledge which important to studies domestication, a 48-day-old that traveled 39 km 12 h 19 min round trip between den prey carcass, including 26.5 trek in 5 h. These should lead deeper more complete understanding this critical period growth development.

Biosonar behaviour of free-ranging porpoises.

Detecting objects in their paths is a fundamental perceptional function of moving organisms. Potential risks and rewards, such as prey, predators, conspecifics or non-biological obstacles, must be detected so that an animal can modify its behaviour accordingly. However, to date few studies have considered how animals in the wild focus their attention. Dolphins and porpoises are known to activel...

Assessment of attachment behaviour to human caregivers in wolf pups (Canis lupus lupus).

Previous research suggested that 16-week old dog pups, but not wolf pups, show attachment behaviour to a human caregiver. Attachment to a caregiver in dog pups has been demonstrated by differential responding to a caregiver compared to a stranger in the Ainsworth Strange Situation Test. We show here that 3-7 week old wolf pups also show attachment-like behaviour to a human caregiver as measured...

Ranging Behaviour of Commercial Free-Range Laying Hens.

In this study, the range use and behaviour of laying hens in commercial free-range flocks was explored. Six flocks were each visited on four separate days and data collected from their outdoor area (divided into zones based on distance from shed and available resources). These were: apron (0-10 m from shed normally without cover or other enrichments); enriched belt (10-50 m from shed where reso...

Basking behaviour and torpor use in free-ranging Planigale gilesi

We investigated the importance of energy-conserving strategies for free-ranging Planigale gilesi in arid Australia. We monitored torpor use and basking behaviour using internal temperature-sensitive transmitters. Torpor was used every day; the maximum torpor bout duration was 18.2 h and the minimum body temperature was 10.5 C. Basking behaviour was observed during rewarming from torpor as well ...

Selfish Pups: Weaning Conflict and Milk Theft in Free-Ranging Dogs

Parent-offspring conflict theory predicts the emergence of weaning conflict between a mother and her offspring arising from skewed relatedness benefits. Empirical observations of weaning conflict have not been carried out in canids. In a field-based study on free-ranging dogs we observed that nursing/suckling bout durations decrease, proportion of mother-initiated nursing bouts decrease and mot...
